KARL BAUER (German / 1868-1942)

The painter and printmaker Karl Conrad Friedrich Bauer was born in Stuttgart, where he studied art under Keller, Igler, and Grünewald. He continued his studies in Munich under Wilhelm von Lindenschmit, and in 1893 went to Paris to complete his art education. Karl Bauer is known for his etched and lithographed portraits. Bauer lived and worked in Munich. Karl Bauer contributed etchings to the Jahresmappe der Freunde Graphischer Kunst in both 1926 and 1927 (portraits of Goethe and Beethoven); the contents list him as Prof. Karl Bauer, so presumably he was also a professor of fine art, perhaps at the Munich Academy.
