LUCIEN BOUCHER (French / 1889-1971)

Lucien Boucher is best-known as an Art Deco poster artist, notably for Air France, but our delightful sets of colour lithographs of Paris shop fronts and a travelling fair show Boucher working on a smaller scale to just as powerful effect. Lucien Boucher was born in Chartres. He studied at the École de Céramique de Sèvres. He made his debut at the Salon d'Automne in 1921, becoming a member in 1923; he also exhibited at the Salon de l'Araignée from 1924-1930. As well as lithographs, Boucher also made wood engravings, and drawings in watercolour and gouache. Lucien Boucher's witty and charming colour lithographs for Boutiques and Boutiques de la Foire make a fascinating cross-channel contrast with those of Eric Ravilious for High Street a decade later.
