MARCEL GROMAIRE (French / 1892-1977)

Cubist painter and printmaker. Marcel Gromaire was born in Noyelles-sur-Sambre. From around 1910 Gromaire was a pupil of Henri Matisse, and also studied printmaking at the Académie Ranson under Félix Vallotton. Under the influence of his friend, the engraver Labourer, Marcel Gromaire devoted considerable energy to printmaking, mostly wood engravings and etchings. See: F.
