CARAVAGGIO (Italian / 1571-1610)

Michelangelo Meriso da Caravaggio brought a new realism to Italian art after the artificial conventions of Mannerism, paving the way for the new Baroque style. Caravaggio is most celebrated for his mastery of light and shade, but he is also notable for the compositional strength of his works. In his own day and since he has been as famous for his swaggering, disreputable lifestyle as for his art.
