PAUL DELAROCHE (French / 1797-1856)

Paul Delaroche was born and died in Paris. His baptismal name was Hippolyte, of which Paul was an abbreviation. While his brother Jules studied with David, Paul Delaroche studied landscape painting with Watelet, the intention being that they should not compete with each other in their later careers. But when Jules gave up painting, Paul turned to history painting, entering the atelier of Gros. This branch of art suited him much more than landscape, and he became one of the most prominent painters of his day.
