EMILE BENASSIT (French / 1833-1902)

The genre painter Louis Émile Benassit (who signed himself E Benassit) was born in Bordeaux, and died in Jouarre. He started his career in London, before moving to Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon de Paris between 1870 and 1889. He retired to Jouarre (Seine-et-Marne) in 1890. As an etcher, Benassit gently satirized Parisian society in his etchings for Les heures Parisiennes in 1866, and in similar works contributed in the 1870s to the journal Paris à l'eau-forte.
