ULPIANO CHECA Y SANZ (Spanish / 1860-1916)

Ulpiano Checa y Sanz was born in Colmena de Oreja, near Madrid. He studied in Madrid between 1876 and 1883, under Manuel Dominguez, Federico de Madrazo, and P. Gonzalvo. Ulpiano Checa y Sanz settled in Paris in 1890, and spent the rest of his career in France. He won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1900. He shared a Paris studio with the English-born Barbizon artist Robert J. Wickenden.
