CHARLES ANTOINE COYPEL (French / 1694-1752)

Charles Antoine Coypel was known for his portraits, genre scenes, and paintings on historical and mythological themes. He was the son of Antoine Coypel and the nephew of Noël Nicolas Coypel. In 1747 Charles Antoine Coypel was named premier peintre du roi, and appointed director of the Academy. Coypel was also a playwright and amateur actor, and a personal friend of the famous actress Adrienne Lecouvreur. Our engraving after his portrait of Lecouvreur in the role of Cornelia in Corneille's The Death of Pompey was executed c. 1730 by Pierre-Imbert Drevet; it was Drevet who added the cracked oval frame and the inscription.
