THEMISTOCLES VON ECKENBRECHER (German / 1842-1921)

Karl Paul Themistocles von Eckenbrecher was born in Athens, which explains his third name, which is the one he used in his artistic career. He studied under Achenbach in Düsseldorf, first exhibiting in Berlin around 1866. Themistocles von Echenbrecher travelled widely in Europe, painting landscapes in the company of his friend Prince Sayn-Wittgenstein, but he is remembered chiefly as an Orientalist.
