JOHANN CHRISTOPH ERHARD (German / 1795-1822)

The career of Johann Christoph Erhard was over almost before it began, but he still left a significant name in German art of the early nineteenth century, remembered especially for his masterly landscape etchings. Erhard was born in Nuremberg, and studied at the Stadtische Zeichenschule there, and later in the atelier of Ambrosius Gabler. In both establishments he overlapped with fellow-student Johann Adam Klein, with whom he travelled to Vienna, Rome, and Naples. While Klein returned to Nuremberg, Johann Christoph Erhard stayed in Italy, dying in Rome in 1882 at the age of just 26. Some sources give his name as Johann Christian Erhard.
