ERIC GILL (British / 1882-1940)

Arthur Eric Rowton Gill was born in Brighton. One of the most important British artists of the twentieth century, Eric Gill continues to exert an influence in the fields of sculpture, typography, letter-carving, and - most importantly for us - wood engraving. The story of Eric Gill's life, with its devotional intensity and its extraordinary sexual and religious preoccupations, is well told in Fiona MacCarthy's biography; the engravings are catalogued by Physick and reproduced in Skelton. See: J. F. Physick, The Engraved Work of Eric Gill, 1963; Christopher Skelton, The Engravings of Eric Gill, 1983; Fiona MacCarthy, Eric Gill, 1989.
