
The Breton artist Pierre Tal-Coat was born Pierre Louis Jacob, but adopted the surname Tal-Coat, which means Wood Face in Breton. Pierre Tal-Coat was one of the founders of the French Abstract Expressionist movement, Tachisme. He was represented by Galerie Maeght. There was a major retrospective of the art of Pierre Tal-Coat at the Grand Palais, Paris, in 1976.
