PIERRE ALECHINSKY (Belgian /
1927-)
Pierre Alechinsky was born in Brussels, where he studied at the École d'Architecture et d'Arts Décoratifs. In 1949 Alechinsky formed the CoBrA Pop Art group, with Christian Dotremont, Karel Appel, and Asger Jorn. CoBrA stands for Copenhagen/Brussels/Amsterdam. In 1951 Alechinsky studied engraving under S. W. Hayter at Atelier 17. Alechinsky was also closely involved with Walasse Ting. He exhibited with Galerie Maeght. Major retrospectives of the art of Pierre Alechinsky were held at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, in 1969; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1981; the Guggenheim, New York, in 1987; and the Musée du Jeu de Paume, Paris, in 1998.
