The Hague School painter Fredericus Jacobus van Rossum du Chattel was born in Leyden. He studied at the Academy of Fine Art in The Hague, with a scholarship awarded by King Willem III. The young artist was also helped and encouraged by his hero, Willem Maris. Rossum du Chattel then worked in Munich and Berlin, before travelling to the Indies, where he lived for two years. Rossum du Chattel specialised in landscapes, often in watercolour, and often featuring his beloved River Vecht.
