PAUL CABET (French / 1815-1876)

The sculptor Jean Baptiste Paul Cabet was born in Nuits (Côte-d'Or), He studied under François Rude at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He subsequently married Rude's daughter, and finished the marble sculptures left incomplete at Rude's death. Cabet's political sympathies may be guessed from his representation of the year 1871 (the year of the Siege of Paris and the crushing of the Paris Commune) as a grieving woman with her head in her hands.
