GEORGE DU MAURIER (French/British / 1834-1896)

Georges Louis Palmella Busson du Maurier, known as George du Maurier was born in Paris. He studied under Gleyre in Paris, and under Nicaise de Keyser and Lerias in Anvers. In the course of his studies his lost the sight in one eye, and trouble with his eyesight dogged his life. Despite this, George du Maurier, who settled in England, became one of the most famous artists in the country through his regular cartoons in Punch. Du Maurier, a close friend of Henry James, also became a novelist, achieving a huge success with his second novel, Trilby.
