CHARLES COURTRY (French / 1846-1897)

The etcher Charles Jean Louis Courtry was born and did in Paris. He studied under Gaucherel and Flameng. His first known etching was published in 1868. Described by Benézit as "un des meilleurs aquafortistes du XIX siècle", Courtry made around 500 etchings, almost all of them interpetative works after others. We have etchings by Courtry after Chardin, Couture, Munkacsy, Ricard, Guardi, and Troyon, as well as an elegant study of an 18th-century English porcelain vase.
