BERNARDUS JOHANNES BLOMMERS (Dutch / 1845-1914)

Bernardus Johannes Blommers (also called Bart John Blommers), was born in La Haye, where he studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. A member of the Hague School, Blommers was influenced by Willem Maris and Josef Israels. A particular tenderness for children and babies is evident in his work, which tends to concentrate on scenes of Dutch peasant life. Blommers knew Vincent van Gogh, who admired his work. There is a 1904 portrait of Bernardus Johannes Blommers by Thomas Eakins, in the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio. Benézit spells his surname Bloomers, but everyone else, including the artist himself, spells it Blommers.
