GEORGE ROMNEY (English / 1734-1802)

The portrait painter George Romney was born in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire. In 1755 he went to Kendal as apprentice to a local painter, Christopher Steele. In 1762 he moved to London, and soon built up a thriving business as a sought-after portrait painter, with a studio in Long Acre. In 1873 he travelled to Rome to study the art of the Old Masters. In 1782 he met Emma Hart, the future Emma Hamilton, whom he painted over 60 times, mostly in various mythological and historical poses.
