ALEXANDRE FALGUIERE – Deux idiots mendiants (Souvenir de Grenade), 1876
Sheet size: 370 x 270 mm
Image size: 255 x 175 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown; scarce – Signed in plate
Original etching by Alexandre Falguière, after his own painting Les nains mendiants, exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1888. One of only two etchings by Falguière. Signed and dated in the plate. Printed on cream laid paper. With printed credits below to the artist, title, and publisher/printer, Vve A. Cadart. The print is a sharp impression, clean and unmarked. There is some dirt marking at the extreme edges of the sheet, not affecting the etching. This impression was included in a portfolio entitled Vingt-cinq eaux-fortes par les principaux artistes modernes issued in 1888 by A. Lévy, who took over Cadart's business and used these portfolios as a means of clearing Cadart;s unsold stock. In this same year, 1888, Falguière exhibited a painting of this subject in the Salon de Paris, entitled Les nains mendiants, and the etching was reprinted in the revue L'Artiste; the reprint can be distinguished from the original Cadart printing as it is titled Nains mendiants - Grenade, and was printed by Taneur. Condition: Very good, see description.
