LUCIEN LEVY-DHURMER – Georges Rodenbach, 1930
Etching
Sheet size: 325x250 mm
Image size: 250x200 mm
Edition: 15 – Unsigned
Colour etching after a pastel drawing by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer, for an edition of the decadent novel Bruges la Morte by Lévy-Dhurmer's close friend Georges Rodenbach. This portrait echoes Lévy-Dhurmer's famous pastel portrait of Rodenbach made in 1895, which is now in the Musée d'Orsay. Because this is a different shape to the rest of the plates, the image as shown here only takes up the top half of the plate area. Below is etched G. Rodenbach 1855 - 1898, flanked by two decorative devices. The actual area of the main image is 120 x 180 mm. The plates were etched by René Lorrain (b. 1873), who studied under Gustave Moreau, and printed "au repérage" by Adolphe Valcké. This method of printing, in which each colour is printed separately and painstakingly in register, leaves small pinholes in the sheet centrally above and below the image. There were 170 numbered copies of this book, of which 155 were on vélin d'Arches wove paper, and 15 on Japon impérial. The copies on wove paper had 4 states of the etchings, and those on Japan had 5. Our copy is an out-of-series hors-commerce copy on Japan, with exactly the same specification as the 15 exemplaires de tête. We therefore have this etching in five different states: the definitive state in colour, the final state in colour with remarques, a state in shades of blue, a state in shades of green, and a state in shades of brown. The brown state only exists in the copies on Japan paper, the other states are duplicated on Arches. The proof offered for sale here is the final state in colour with a small drypoint remarque placed centrally below the main image. These remarque images are quite faint, so we have not tried to include them in the photos on this site; please ask if you are interested and we will email a photo of the complete sheet and a close-up of the remarque (in this case, a sprig of mistletoe). Equally if you are interested in the other states of this etching, please contact us. Condition: Fine.
