THOMAS SIDNEY MORAN
Print detail
THOMAS SIDNEY MORAN –
The Sounding Sea, 1880
Etching
Sheet size: 285 x 385 mm
Image size: 145 x 295 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown; extremely scarce – Signed in plate
Original etching by Thomas Moran, signed and dated in the plate. Quite the most beautiful and dramatic etching I have seen from any of the New York Etching Club artists - there's a debt to Hokusai and to Courbet there, but it is also a strikingly individual statement. Printed and published by der Gesellschaft für Vervielfãltigende Kunst, Vienna. The print is in generally excellent conditon with a few marks and spots in the margins, easily framed out. Moran's painting of a similar composition, The Much Resounding Sea, is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; it is dated 1884, so it appears this etching came first. Condition: Excellent, see description.
