Dr. PAUL FERDINAND GACHET – La Haute-Seine, 1874
Etching
Sheet size: 190x280 mm
Image size: 105x145 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown; extremely scarce – Signed in plate
Original etching by Dr Paul Ferdinand Gachet. The etching is signed in the plate three times, though never with Gachet's real name. In the top left is Gachet's symbol of a duck (often the only signature on his etchings); in the top right are the initials V. R.; and at the bottom left is Gachet's full artistic pseudonym, P. Van Ryssel, and the date '74. At this time Gachet was associating on equal terms with Pissarro, Cézanne, and Guillaumin. This lovely Impressionist etching shows the strong influence of Camille Pissarro. Unfortunately it also shows the after-effects of a spray of liquid of some kind, which has left unsightly blobs over the sheet; the accident evidently happened on the reverse of the etching, but the stains show through. Disregarding the surrounding margins, there are two largish marks on the river - one by the boat at the left and one above the full signature - and a couple of very indistinct small ones, and seven or eight much smaller marks in the sky. It can't be denied that these marks disfigure the etching; but it is still a rare and lovely thing. Published by Paris à l'eau-forte; printed on wove paper by Delâtre. The extreme edges of the sheet, which lay outside the protection of the tissue guard, have darkened slightly. Condition: See description.
