HENRI MATISSE – Tristesse du roi, 1952
Sheet size: 355 x 530 mm
Image size: 325 x 440 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown – Signed in plate
Sadness of the king. Lithograph after a gouache découpée, signed and dated in the stone "Henri Matisse 1952". The lithographs after Matisse's late paper cutouts were made in collaboration with the master lithographer Fernand Mourlot, printed by Mourlot Frères on wove paper and published by Tériade for Éditions Verve. This print comes from the edition published in a special 1958 double number of the deluxe art revue Verve devoted entirely to these last works, created between 1950 and 1954. Opinions differ about the print-run of Verve; the best estimate seems to be 2000 copies. A double-page spread with a central vertical fold that would virtually disappear in framing, and thread-holes that appear as tiny white marks within the print. Condition: Very good, see description..
