ALBERT MARQUET – Lesbian couple X, c.1905
Sheet size: 250 x 325 mm
Image size: 220 x 290 mm
Edition: 325 – Signed in plate
Original lithograph by Albert Marquet, initialled in the stone. From Albert Marquet, L'Académie des Dames: Vingt Attitudes, clandestinely published by Éditions des Quatre-Chemins Editart, Paris, with the insouciant publication details 'New York: Sixty-ninth avenue', circa 1905. There were 25 copies on Japon impérial, and 300 copies on vélin d'Arches, of which this is no. 281. The lithographic stones were effaced after printing. Sold with a copy of the justification page. This print is in excellent condition; if you hold it up to the light you can see a mottled effect on the sheet, which seems to be a flaw in this batch of paper, but the mottling is not evident when looked at directly. The publication has no date; the date c.1905 is given because two drawings that are evidently studies for these lithographs were included in the exhibition Le Dessin Fauve: 1900-1908 at the Musée Cantini, Marseille, in 2002 (reproduced on p.130 of the catalogue). These drawings are not precisely dated, but are grouped with a stylistically similar drawing of Camoin and his model dated 1905. Condition: Excellent, see description.
