GUSTAVE ASSIRE –
Le Lapin Agile, 1926
Etching
Sheet size: 218 x 263 mm
Image size: 176 x 217 mm
Edition: 50 – Signed in plate
Le Lapin Agile in Montmartre was the favourite haunt of Parisian artists and bohemians, including Picasso, Modigliani, Apollinaire and Utrillo. Etching, signed in the plate, printed by Ducros et Colas on Japon. No. 41/50. This is the third and final state of this etching (we also have the first and second states; please enquire if you are interested). All states of etchings had remarques (extra drawings in the margin), so the image size given is that of the etching plate; the central images are 131 x 182. Besides the 50 exemplaires du tête on Japon with an original watercolour and the etchings in three states, there were also 500 copies of the etchings in their final state on vélin teinté. From Assire's classic suite of etchings on the subject of prostitution and nightlife in 1920s Paris, Images Secrètes de Paris, published by René Kieffer with an accompanying text by Pierre Mac Orlan. Sold with a copy of the justification page. Condition: Fine.
