SOPHIE TAEUBER-ARP (Swiss / 1889-1943)

Sophie Taeuber-Arp was born in Davos, Switzerland. She studied art in Munich and Hamburg. She met Hans (Jean) Arp in 1915, and the coupled married in 1921. They were both involved in the Dada and Surrealist movements in Zurich, where Sophie Taeuber-Arp taught at the School of Arts and Crafts from 1916-1929. In the 1930s the Arps lived in Paris, where Sophie was a member of the constructivist groups Cercle et Carré and Abstraction-Création. From 1941-1942, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and her husband were part of the art colony that sought refuge from the Nazis in Grasse, alongside Sonia Delaunay.
