MAURICE LELOIR (French / 1853-1940)

Maurice Leloir, who specialised in genre and historical paintings, was born in Paris into an artistic family. His father was the painter Jean Baptiste Leloir, his mother was the watercolorist Héloïse Colin, and his maternal grandfather was the painter Alexandre Colin. He benefited from the advice and teaching of all of these, as well as that of his elder brother Alexandre Louis Leloir. Maurice regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he was a member. Maurice Leloir's collection of historical clothing, on which he was an expert, forms the basis of the Musée du Costume in Paris.
