The important abstract expressionist artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva was born in Lisbon in 1908. A child prodigy, by her teens Maria Vieira da Silva was already in Paris, studying painting with Fernand Léger, sculpture with Antoine Bourdelle, and engraving with S. W. Hayter at Atelier 17. In Paris in 1932 she met and married the Hungarian painter Árpád Szenes. She took French citizenship in 1956. There is now a joint Árpád Szenes-Vieira da Silva museum in Lisbon.
