LEON BONNAT (French / 1834-1923)

The painter and printmaker Léon-Joseph-Florentin Bonnat is credited with only 13 etchings in Bailly-Herzberg's L'Estampe en France. Léon Bonnat was born in Bayonne (Pyrénées Atlantiques), the city to which he bequeathed his own art collection, sufficient to fill its own museum. Bonnat studied under Madrazo in Madrid, where he lived from 1846-1853, and then in the Paris atelier of Léon Cogniet. Bonnat was a highly-successful portrait painter, and also ran a teaching studio at the Paris Beaux-Arts; among his pupils were Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Raoul Dufy, Othon Friesz, and Georges Braque.
