KARL SCHRAG (German/American / 1912-1995)

Karl Schrag was born in Karlsruhe in 1912. After studying in Geneva and Paris he emigrated to the USA in 1938, becoming an American citizen in 1944. Karl Schrag studied etching at the Art Students' League in New York, and then at S. W. Hayter's Atelier 17. The reputation pf Karl Schrag as one of the finest printmakers of the century was sealed when he was appointed director of Atelier 17 in New York in 1950. Schrag also taught at Brooklyn College and the Cooper Union. A retrospective of the art of Karl Schrag was organised by the American Federation of Arts after his death.
