JEAN RENE BAZAINE (French /
1904-1995)
Born in Paris, Jean René Bazaine, a major figure in the post-war School of Paris, studied at the Académie Julian and at the Beaux-Arts, Paris. Bazaine began as a sculptor, studying under Landowski, but abandoned sculpture in 1924 in favour of painting. Friends and colleagues of Jean René Bazaine include Jacques Villon, Jean Fautrier, Édouard Goerg, and Marcel Gromaire. Bazaine most often exhibited with Maurice Estève and Charles Lapicque. The art of Jean René Bazaine may be defined as Post-Cubist Abstraction, and there are similarities with another of his close friends, Alfred Manessier.
