JACOB HENRICUS MARIS (Dutch /
1837-1899)
Jacob Maris was born in La Haye. From the age of 12, Jacob Maris studied at the Académie d'Art in La Haye. With his brother Matthijs he later studied at the Académie d'Anvers, alongside Alma Tadema, who became a close friend. In 1865, Jacob Maris went to Paris to study under Hébert at the Beaux-Arts. There, Maris absorbed the influence of Corot, Jongkind, and the Barbizon School. His two brothers Matthijs Maris and Willem Maris were also important Dutch painters of the Hague School.
