HEYWOOD HARDY (English / 1842-1933)

The painter and etcher Heywood Hardy was born in Chichester in 1842, the younger son of the artist James Hardy. Heywood Hardy studied at the Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Pielse. He specialised in animals, hunting scenes, and portraits. His skills as an etcher were highly admired, and he was elected RE. In 1925, at the age of 83, Heywood Hardy anticipated Stanley Spencer by decorating the walls of Clymping Church in West Sussex with Biblical scenes showing Christ striding across the Sussex Downs, surrounded by recognisable figures from the local villages.
