CLAUDE VIALLAT (French / 1936-)

Claude Viallat was born in Nîmes, and studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier and Paris. There was a retrospective of the art of Claude Viallat at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in 1982. Painter and sculptor of assemblages, Claude Viallat was a central figure in the avant-garde group Support/Surfaces who organised open-air exhibitions in the south of France 1968-71; there was a retrospective of Support/Surfaces at the Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1998. The art of Claude Viallat has obvious links with abstract contemporaries such as Sam Francis, but is also deeply informed by that of Henri Matisse. See: Catalogue of the exhibition Claude Viallat, Centre Georges Pompidou, 1982; Catalogue of the exhibition Claude Viallat, Musée d'Art Contemporain, Nîmes, 1989.
