CLARE LEIGHTON (English/American / 1898-1989)

One of the most gifted wood engravers of her day, Clare Veronica Hope Leighton studied at Brighton College of Art and then the Slade. In 1922 she joined Noel Rooke's pioneering evening classes in wood engraving at the Central School of Art. Her name was first made by the appearance in the 1920s of numerous wood engravings in the London Mercury, whose editor J.C. Squire was a great admirer of her work. Among a prolific output, her masterpiece is the 1933 work The Farmer's Year, with 12 oversized engravings depicting working life on an English farm. Although her name is forever linked with images of the English countryside, from 1939 Clare Leighton lived in the USA, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1945.
