CHARLES CHAPLIN (French / 1825-1891)

The fame of the comedian Charlie Chaplin has somewhat eclipsed that of the French painter and printmaker Charles Chaplin, but he was an important Realist painter, with a style so polished his paintings were later sold with false signatures of Millet to unsuspecting buyers by unscrupulous dealers. He was born in Les Andelys, to an English father and French mother. Chaplin studied under Drolling. Besides the Acadèmie Julian, the atelier of Charles Chaplin was almost the only place in Paris that welcomed women students; the Impressionists Mary Cassatt and Eva Gonzalèz were both taught by Chaplin.
